Sen. Malcolm Smith became the Senate Majority leader when the Senate changed hands in January 2009. Malcolm Smith is an African-American member of the New York State Senate representing the 14th Senate district in Southeast Queens. First elected in 2000, Smith is a Democrat and was elected Minority Leader in January 2007.
