Morricone Segreto

Ennio Morricone is possibly the most well-known film music composer of the 20th century. Behind the mainstream Morricone, hugely celebrated by critics and acclaimed by his audience, there is a hidden Morricone, a Morricone Segreto: an eccentric, underground genius who used his refined education to implant cultured materials in a daily, popular context.

In late 2020 Morricone’s so-called ‘Dream Team’ – comprising Argentinean organist Giorgio Carnini, guitarist and composer Bruno Battisti D’Amario, saxophonist and arranger Gianni Oddi, pianist and composer Enrico Pieranunzi and vocalist Edda Dell’Orso – convened for a special listening session of Morricone’s first posthumous album, Morricone Segreto, which was released via Decca Records and CAM Sugar. The reunion took place place at the historic Forum Music Village, the studio in Rome - founded by Morricone himself in 1970, along with Armando Trovajoli, Luis Bacalov and Piero Piccioni - where many of Morricone’s famous soundtracks were recorded, including Once Upon a Time in America (1984) and Cinema Paradiso (1988).

The new release is a treasure trove of rare and forgotten pieces and alternate takes from the historical archives of CAM Sugar. Morricone Segreto - which unveils the hidden, psychedelic and dark-tinged side of the Maestro, explores what is possibly Morricone’s richest creative period, between the end of the 1960s and the early 80s, demonstrating his long lasting influence on generations of musicians and film directors to this day.
